Welcome To Lulu's Beach House
We named our beach house after Lulu Christensen Salmon McDaniels, or Grandma Lulu, to us. She was one of those incredible people, full of life and love, who touch your heart and life forever.
In 1959 Lulu and her first husband John (Jack), moved to Whidbey Island for his health. They loved the area and had two beach houses on West Beach while they lived in Coupeville. Six years after Jack passed, Lulu married Robert McDaniels. They set up their home in Oak Harbor off of Taylor Rd.
Lulu had a lot of talents, but she was most known for her talent as a singer. She had an unusually low, sultry voice and started singing as a teenager.
Under the stage name, Joyce Palmer, she was the first woman to sing “God Bless America” over the radio. She sang professionally for several years until she put it aside to devote her time to being a mother to her six children. She took it up again later, and continued to sing on the island long into her 80’s.
Our fondest memories of her are her ready smiles, big hugs, and quirky sense of humor. Let’s just say, you could expect the unexpected from her.
For us, this island represents family, seafood, and fun relaxing times. We hope you enjoy your stay here and that you’re able to build as many happy memories as we have.
